Naxos (/ˈnæksɒs/; Greek: Νάξος, pronounced [ˈnaksos]) is a Greek island—at 429 km2 (166 sq mi)[citation needed] the largest of the Cyclades island group in the Aegean. It was the centre of archaic Cycladic culture. The island is famous as a source of emery, a rock rich in corundum, which until modern time was one of the best abrasives available. The largest town and capital of the island is Chora or Naxos City, with 6,533 inhabitants (2001 census). The main villages are Filoti, Apiranthos, Vivlos, Agios Arsenios, Koronos and Glinado.
Naxos is the largest and more fertile Cycladic island, with an exceptionally variable landscape. Since ancient times Naxos has been famous for its marble and agricultural products.
The 140m2 villa in a plot of 5,000m2 is in a quiet location in Orkos, well away from the main tourist areas. It can be reached via an unpaved road which is accessible with a normal car. At a distance of 100 meters is a small sandy beach. The large sand beaches of Plaka and Mikri Vigla are just a few minutes walking distance. Mikri Vigla Beach has ideal wind- and kite-surfing conditions. Two wind-and kite surfing schools provide lessons and equipment hire.
During the season, the village of Mikri Vigla has two well stocked supermarkets and a range of traditional tavernas. Out of season, Naxos town, about 20 minutes driving distance, has some excellent supermarkets and a wide range of shops. For general freedom and mobility, car rental is recommended.
